Spessartine Garnet was named after Spessart in Bavaria, Germany.
Spessartine Garnets contain manganese. If it is orange-yellow, it is known in the trade as Mandarin Garnet (usually found in Madagascar). Normally orange to orange-red. Violet-red spessartines are found in rhyolites in Colorado and Maine, USA. The orange garnets are due to sodium-rich pegmatites.
