Smithsonite, also known as zinc spar, is the mineral form of zinc carbonate.
It is NOT the same as hemimorphite but they are very similar in appearance. It is a secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of zinc-bearing ore deposits.
It is commonly associated with hemimorphite, willemite, cerussite, malachite, azurite, aurichalcite and anglesite. With manganese, it leads to rhodochrosite, and with iron to siderite. If it is very rich in cadmium, it gives a bright yellow color that is sometimes called “turkey fat ore.”
