Sphalerite is a sulfide mineral. It is the most important ore of zinc.
Various impurities can give the crystal a variety of colors. Depending on the impurities, the sphalerite will fluoresce under UV light. It can also be triboluminescent of yellow-orange.
Gemmy, colorless to pale green sphalerite from New Jersey, USA are highly fluorescent orange and/or blue under long wave UV light.
Marmatite or Christophite is an opaque black variety of sphalerite and its coloring is due to high quantities of iron.
Red, orange or brownish-red sphalerite is termed ruby blende or ruby zinc.
Dark colored sphalerite is termed black-jack.
