Gold-Sheen Obsidians are mined in Mexico but the deposits were found relatively recently. Gold-Sheen Obsidians produce the gold flash due to air bubbles and/or other inclusions within the mineral.
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava from a volcano cools rapidly, and is an igneous rock.
Obsidian is mineral-like but not actually a true mineral because it is a glass, not a crystalline. The composition is too variable and sometimes is classified as a mineraloid.
Pure obsidian is normally dark in appearance but iron and other transition elements may give it a dark brown to black color.
Most black Obsidians contain nano inclusions of magnetite, an iron oxide.
