Chalcopyrite is a copper iron sulfide mineral and has a brassy to golden yellow color. It is a conductor of electricity and copper can be extracted from it using various methods. It is often confused with pyrite and gold but its hardness and streak can help a user differentiate it from the two: Chalcopyrite is much softer than pyrite and can be scratched by a knife, however it is harder than gold which can be scratched by copper if pure—it also has a distinctive black streak with green flecks, whereas pyrite has a black streak and gold has a yellow streak. It is a member of the tetragonal crystal system and can be found in Ontario, the Andes Mountains and South Australia.
Chalcopyrite is also intentionally treated to give the iridescent blue and violet colors. We have provided photos to show what it looks like untreated and treated.
