Tourmaline is a crystalline silicate mineral group which boron is compounded with aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium or potassium.
Black Tourmalines are normally Schorl species, which are brownish-black to black. There are other species, such as Dravite species (dark yellow to brownish-black), Elbaite species (red or pinkish red [rubellite variety], light blue to bluish-green [indicolite variety], green [verdelite or emerald variety] and colorless [achroite variety]).
Schorl is the most common species, which is where black tourmaline falls under. Dravite is also called brown tourmaline and is sodium magnesium rich. Elbaite is a lithium-tourmaline. Iron-rich tourmalines are usually black to bluish-black to deep brown, while magnesium-rich tourmalines are brown to yellow, and lithium-rich tourmalines can be any color.
